If you are a developer you most probably will have heard of this file format. Even if you are not, but own a low cost mobile, you would have come across this file formay. Yes, the files with JAD (Java Application Descriptor) are related to Java. And many of you would have come across the file format while installing java games on your phone. This file format is basically the Java Descriptor File Formats which are used by &qout;Java&qout; from Sun Microsystems Inc. The contents of these files include the MIDlets’ descriptions. The MIDlets are the JAVA ME (Micro Edition) applications. Basically, the files with the JAD are the files which are used to package the data or applications, just like games, so that they can be downloaded directly on any system or on the mobile phones as well.
The MIDlets are made for the virtual machines of Java ME. They are used to package the game data and other applications to be used for the mobile phones. In a MIDlet, there are two basic file format types. The files with the .jar format contain the core i.e. the actual application data. On the other hand, the .jad format constitutes of the technical information which is necessary to run and operate the MIDlet program. It is important that both file extensions, i.e. .jar and .jad should be associated with the MIDlet program.
The biggest advantage of the files with the JAD is that they allow the mobile phones to be functionally in interaction with the online web services. These services include the sending and receiving of multimedia messages with the mobile phone on the web, through the GSM mobile internet or through a wifi connection. This is the reason why the Java application s are so important to the cell phones.
The files with the .jad extension can be easily opened with the Java Program in the system or in the mobile phone. Though the .jad files may contain anything ranging from applications to software programs, these are used for themes as well, by some of the devices launched by Blackberry. On some devices, it is not possible to connect to the web and download the content through the Java files, until and unless a memory card is inserted to the device. There is also an option to retrieve the .jad files from the .jar files. This is also a very useful technique as some mobile devices only allow downloading the larger JAR files.

- If the file doesn’t open automatically and you see a “Windows can’t open a file” message then you should search for a program which can open JAD file
- If you have a program which can open JAD file installed on your computer then launch that program and select “File” and then “Open” or similar options from its menu to open the JAD file
- If you don’t have the program installed then you need to try searching for “JAD wiki”, “how to open JAD file” in the search engine.
- Once you find the application, install it on your computer
- After the program is installed double-click on the JAD file to open it
File extensions are used by Windows operating system to specify what kind of information is stored in the file. Every file in Windows OS needs to have file extension and file extensions are used by Windows to determine which application it should use to open the file. Every application installed on Windows OS places information about which extensions it could open into the Windows registry and Windows uses this information to determine which application it should launch when user double-clicks on the file. If application which can open JAD file is not installed, then Windows will show ‘Windows can’t open JAD file’ message and buttons to either select an application on the computer which can open the file or to search the web for the application which can open JAD file.
