The file extension .db refers to the Thumbnail Database files. These files with the DB .db are associated with the Windows operating system. The name of such a file is THUMBS.DB. The .db extension files may contain various types of information, such as data stored in tables and filed data values. After the data is entered in the file, it is then organized to the model of the data being used, and the most common model which is used is the relational model.
So, how do you create this type of file format?
The DB can be created with programs and database softwares such as Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro. Moreover, the .db files can also be transformed and exported into different other formats. Using the above mentioned programs, the .db files can be converted to the DB .CSV. Such files are used for many purposes, including the gaming softwares and files. There is also an option of importing these files through the multiple data base programs.
There are many applications which you can use to view, edit and access DB files. Windows (the Icon Database) by Microsoft Corporation is the most common program for this purpose. Apart from this, the other programs are ANSYS (a database program), AcrView (a type of an Object Database File by ESRI), and Synopsis Design Compiler, dbVista, Paradox, XTreeGold and Smartware, dBase IV, DIGIBooster and iRiver Plus3 (a Music database file progra m).
So, what’s special about these type of files?
The .db files are generally easy to handle. If a folder in the system is displaying the icon of a thumbnail for the graphic files, then it means that the .db files are stored in such a folder or file. In case a file with the DB .db gets deleted or corrupted, then it will be automatically rebuilt by the Windows the next time that folder is reopened. To view such files, the folder setting may have to be altered as they are generally the hidden files. If the thumbnails get out of synchronization with the main files of the program, then the .db files should just be deleted as it would get rebuilt automatically with a proper synchronization.
File formats today come in numerous numbers and all of them carry out their task in a unique way.

File extensions are used by Windows operating system to specify what kind of information is stored in the file. Every file in Windows OS needs to have file extension and file extensions are used by Windows to determine which application it should use to open the file. Every application installed on Windows OS places information about which extensions it could open into the Windows registry and Windows uses this information to determine which application it should launch when user double-clicks on the file. If application which can open DB file is not installed, then Windows will show ‘Windows can’t open DB file’ message and buttons to either select an application on the computer which can open the file or to search the web for the application which can open DB file.
